list of best dog names popular unique

Naming your dog is the first experience you share with your new pet and it can be a bonding experience too. That is why finding good dog names is important and sometimes a little difficult, there are so many to choose from!

If possible, a dog name should be short and sharp. It should also be memorable or cute or special to you. It should also be a sound that is not often said in common situations, you want the name to sound unique to your dog.

Finally, you must teach your dog its name! Don't assume that he or she will learn it on its own. Most dogs I know think they are called "Look what I have!". Below you will find the best dog names for male and female pets.

3 Essential items to get for your new dog

You got your puppy, you picked its name...now get these essential items to start enjoying life with your new furry best friend!

Teaching your dog its name is one of the most important skills you can practice with your new puppy. You will use it's name indoors, but having a dog that know its name outdoors is life saving! But before you puppy learns its name and how to come when called, you need to think about safety. These 3 essential items are a must:

  1. Dog Collar: A dog collar should be simple, easy to put and comfortable for the dog. Do NOT use choke or martingale type collars, these hurt your dog and make walks stressful; which can later lead to the dog pulling on the leash or even becoming reactive to other dogs or people in the street. I recommend a simple buckle collar that snaps shut.
  2. Dog Name Tag: Your dog should always wear a collar and name tag when outdoors in case he/she gets lost. I love name tags that slide on the collar and don't make a constant "tinckling" sound as your dog moves. In addition, these slide on dog tags are less likely to snag on fences or branches, which can be a problem if your dog gets stuck.
  3. Long dog leash: The N˚1 mistake I see dog owners do is to get uncomfortable and very short leashes. The shorter the leash, the more your dog will pull on the leash! Your dog needs to be able to smell everything he/she wants to during walks. Sniffing is a very relaxing activity for dogs (it actually lowers their heart rate!). Letting your dog sniff during walks will guarantee a very pleasant outing! I recommend the most simple long lines, STAY AWAY from retractable leashes (they are very uncomfortable to hold and can teach your dog to pull).

If you want to learn more about loose leash walking, here is a tutorial article.

Dogs will hear any sound we make, but to help them understand their name a short and sharp sound is the best. However, this is not a requirement.
